What are the benefits of an ACG fellowship?
The ACG’s fellowship programs allow professionals and academics in the relatively early stages of their careers to complete in-depth research while meeting with their transatlantic counterparts. The programs are designed to broaden fellows’ professional experiences and worldviews and to enable them to establish working relationships overseas. Most fellows use this opportunity as a stepping stone to advance their careers.
What are the responsibilities of a fellow?
Before traveling, Fellows are expected to produce a detailed, day-by-day itinerary outlining with whom they will meet and when. The ACG encourages fellows to have at least two to three daily appointments. While abroad, the fellows must explore the subjects proposed in their application unless the ACG has approved a new topic. Upon returning from overseas, fellows must submit a 4,000-word analytical report based on the research results they conducted. If fellows produce any additional materials – including but not limited to news articles, blogs, podcasts, etc. – they should be shared with the ACG.
What do fellows receive?
Fellows receive a $7,000 stipend to cover the cost of transatlantic airfare and room and board for a minimum of 21 days.
The initial stipend payment will have $1,000 withheld pending the submission of a final report.
What are the qualifications to apply?
The McCloy Fellows requires you to be either a U.S. citizen living in the United States or a German citizen living in Germany. Fellows must have completed a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and must be in the relatively early stages of their careers. The Hunt fellowship requires that you are in the final stages of pursuing or have recently completed a Ph.D.
The Kellen Fellows must be German citizens living and working in Berlin.
What documents do I need to apply for the fellowship?
To apply for a fellowship, candidates must submit an application form, a cover letter, a three- to five-page project proposal, a current resume, and two letters of recommendation. Additional information may be needed depending on the fellowship.
When are applications due?
In 2024, the application due date is May 1, 2024.
How should I submit my application?
Applications should be submitted here.
Applications sent via email should be received no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on the due date. It is not necessary to mail any portion of your application.
Do my letters of recommendation need to be sent with my application?
No, letters of recommendation may be sent separately. The same due date applies to letters of recommendation.
Am I expected to contact possible meeting partners and have a full itinerary planned before I apply?
No, but you should have a basic idea of your meeting partners and include this information in your application. Contacting meeting partners before being awarded a fellowship is neither required nor suggested.
How long after I apply will I know if I have received the fellowship?
The selection process varies depending on the fellowship. On average, it takes two months for a decision to be made. All applicants will receive emailed letters of notification.
As an American, am I allowed to travel to other parts of Europe?
With prior approval from the ACG, Americans may travel to other parts of Europe if necessary for their research. However, Germany must be the primary research focus.
If the ACG awarded me a fellowship in the past, can I apply for a second fellowship?
No, fellowship alumni are not eligible for a second fellowship.
