NYC: Economic Volatility and the U.S.-German Relationship

The ACG and the Wirtschaftsrunde will host a discussion and luncheon with Karl Matthias Klause, Head of the Economic Department at the German Embassy in Washington, DC.

Karl Matthias Klause is a career diplomat in the German Foreign Office. Since October 2017, he has served as the Head of the Economic Department at the German Embassy in Washington, DC, where his focus is on economic affairs, finance, trade, investment, and business, as well as science, education, and infrastructure. Before coming to Washington, he served as the Chief of Staff for Minister of State (Deputy Foreign Minister) Dr. Maria Böhmer. In this role, he advised her on key foreign policy issues, including external economic policy and sustainable development issues, cultural relations and education policy, and Germany’s United Nations and global policies.

 

Prior to that, he was Director for Central Europe in the Foreign Office, and he worked in the Federal Chancellery and in the Division for Cabinet and Parliamentary Affairs as a liaison to the Bundestag. He has served at German Missions in Washington (Spokesperson), London (Cultural Attaché), and Warsaw (Press Attaché). Originally from Westphalia, Mr. Klause studied literature, history, and philosophy in Münster and at the Free University in Berlin. He is a Board member of the German Shakespeare Society.
