The American Council for Germany (ACG) is launching a new initiative to support its activities at the subnational level which are designed to foster pragmatic problem-solving, engagement, and innovative collaboration between Germany and the United States. By investing in projects with participants from the state and local level, the ACG aims to strengthen the transatlantic relationship through the development of solutions to common challenges impacting the daily lives of people in both countries. Â
Why This Work Matters
Since 1952, the ACG has worked to strengthen the German-American partnership, a cornerstone of postwar Western democracy and global peace. The mutual understanding fostered by the close cooperation, shared values, and common interests of Germany and the United States have allowed this alliance to make great strides in addressing numerous global challenges. These include fighting climate change, supporting our respective economies through trade, direct foreign investment, and job creation, and maintaining strong defense and security cooperation.Â
This bilaterial relationship is not just important for historical or sentimental reasons. Germany and the United States maintain a strong bond built on shared values and common interests. Close cooperation has bolstered each country’s security and prosperity. In light of the gravity of the challenges we face, this alliance is indispensable.Â
The American Council on Germany looks forward to fostering continued understanding and strengthening this vital partnership in the years to come.

Building Understanding by Increasing Capacity
German and American Study Tour participants, meeting at the Georgia State Senate, discuss shared concerns such as affordable housing and voter rights.
With a new government in Washington as of January and elections on the horizon in Germany, this is the time to double down on the exchange of ideas and best practices at the subnational level. The ACG plans to increase its focus on programs with decision-makers and opinion leaders at the state and local levels in an effort to deepen the German-American relationship.Â
Subnational diplomacy, which involves local, regional, or state-level governments engaging in international relations, is critical as global issues become increasingly complex. Local governments, on the front lines of addressing these issues, often have more flexibility than national governments, allowing them to experiment with innovative policies on issues like climate change, civic engagement, education, and economic development that can inspire broader national or global strategies.Â
The ACG’s Fund for Strengthening Subnational Understanding is the first step in this endeavor. With increased funding, the ACG will be able to:
Invest in the Future
Maximizing the full potential of these and other new programs requires our donors’ generosity. We, therefore, invite you to join us in this important effort.Â
With a goal of $50,000 in 2024, every donation will play a vital role in supporting the ACG’s mission to foster continued understanding and collaboration in the transatlantic relationship. Supporting the ACG’s Fund for Strengthening Subnational Understanding will help ensure that the German-American alliance remains strong at the state and local levels for years to come.Â
