The spread of COVID-19 and the ensuing global lock-down as governments try to slow the spread of the corona virus has tested individuals and institutions around the world. Since March of 2020, the ACG has stepped up its digital programming by hosting webinars and video discussions which bring together policy makers and thought leaders from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss some of the key issues shaping transatlantic relations in an unprecedented time. In addition to organizing events on its own, the ACG has also partnered with other organizations such as 1014 and Atlantik-Brücke to launch new series designed to reach beyond the ACG community.
The ACG regularly hosts a discussion with a journalist based in Germany on the topics making the headlines and shaping political discourse. On November 6, the ACG hosted a Kaffeepause with Bojan Pancevski, Germany Correspondent, The Wall Street Journal.
On November 1, the ACG hosted a virtual discussion about the broader implications of the conflict with Middle East expert Prof. Dr. Eckart Woertz, Director of the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies and Professor for Contemporary History and Politics of the Middle East at the University of Hamburg.
On October 27, the ACG, in collaboration with 1014, held a virtual discussion with Steven Erlanger, Chief Diplomatic Correspondent in Europe for The New York Times, and Dr. Anna Sauerbrey, Foreign Editor at the weekly DIE ZEIT, about the evolving geopolitical landscape, emerging alliances, and the growing polarization between Western democracies and authoritarian regimes.
On October 24, the ACG held a virtual discussion with Dr. Karl-Heinz Kamp, Lecturer at the University “Roma Tre” and Associate Fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), about Germany’s nuclear defense policy and deterrence.
On October 23, the ACG hosted a special edition of the regular Kaffeepause with former German Ambassador to Poland Rolf Nikel.
