Russia’s War in Ukraine: The Situation is Serious

October 31 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT

It has been more than two years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Despite heavy fighting, Russia still occupies 18 percent of Ukraine. Ukraine’s counteroffensive efforts have stalled, and Russia has launched a new offensive in Ukraine’s northeast Kharkiv region. Meanwhile, Russia continues to bomb Ukrainian cities and block its ports, and Ukraine has increased drone attacks on Russian ships and infrastructure.

The situation in Ukraine is serious. Fighting and air strikes have inflicted over 30,000 civilian casualties, while 3.7 million people are internally displaced, and 6.5 million have fled Ukraine. More than 14 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.

Join the ACG for a discussion with award-winning Stern reporter Moritz Gathmann about the situation in Ukraine. He has covered Ukraine for over a decade and has been reporting on the war from throughout the country.

Moritz Gathmann is a journalist who has reported extensively from Ukraine for SPIEGEL magazine, Stern, and other news outlets. He has been a journalist for two decades and has focused on post-Soviet countries. He spent five years in Russia as a correspondent for German media outlets – first in Moscow and then Kaluga. In 2014, he was a witness to the bloody upraising in the Maidan, and reported on the war in eastern Ukraine. Since February 2022, he has covered the war in Ukraine.
