At home, Germany and the United States are grappling with a rise of political ideologies on the left and right fringes. At the same time, both countries are competing with international forces and competition from countries like Russia and China that are putting further strain on the Western liberal order. Coming fresh off state elections in Germany as well as the midterms in the United States, join us to discuss these topics with Lars Klingbeil, Secretary General of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and a member of the German Bundestag.
Lars Klingbeil has served as Secretary General of the Social Democratic Party since 2017. He has been a member of the Bundestag since 2005. During his time in the Bundestag, Mr. Klingbeil has served as a member of the Committee on European Affairs, the Committee on Health, and the Defense Committee, as well as a deputy member of the Committee on Cultural Affairs and Media. Mr. Klingbeil is especially interested in the digital revolution and the use of digital media in political communication and campaigning. He began his political career as youth education advisor for the Social Democratic Party in North Rhine-Westphalia and served as the Deputy Leader of the SPD youth organization (“Jusos”) from 2003 to 2007. He holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Hannover.
