Can AI Be Creative?

November 14, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm EST

On November 14, the ACG, DWIH, and HPI will host a discussion and reception with Professor Gerard de Melo, Full Professor at the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering and Chair for Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems at the University of Potsdam.

While creativity is often considered a uniquely human trait, there have recently been notable advances in Generative AI systems that readily produce increasingly convincing pictures, literature, as well as music. This raises important debates about the role of humans and machines in the creative process. This presentation will delve into fundamental concepts of creativity and how they relate to AI, highlighting how machines are trained to generate new content based on massive amounts of human data. In addition, this talk will address the ongoing debate surrounding authorship, and intellectual property.

Gerard de Melo is a full professor at the Hasso Plattner Institute and the University of Potsdam in Germany, where he leads the AI and Intelligent Systems research group. Previously, he was an assistant professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey as well as at Tsinghua University in Beijing and a post-doctoral research scholar at ICSI/UC Berkeley.
Professor de Melo has published over 200 academic papers on various aspects of AI, covering technical issues as well as societal and philosophical issues such as bias, transparency, and knowledge.
