Dr. Ellen Ueberschär is Co-President of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, the German green political foundation headquartered in Berlin with more than 30 offices worldwide. She has been a longstanding member of the Foundation’s Board as well as of the Green Policy Forum. From 2006 to 2017, she served as Secretary General of the German Lutheran Church Assembly, a biannual congress that brings together hundreds of thousands of lay members of the Lutheran Church for discussions on faith, politics, and culture.
Dr. Ueberschär is the author of multiple books on faith, politics, and society. She has long been an outspoken advocate for gender equality and human rights. Born in East Berlin, Dr. Ueberschär grew up in the former GDR, where she was refused permission to study medicine by state authorities. She opted instead for theology, obtaining her Ph.D. from Marburg University in 2002.
