Garrick Utley, Chairman
Garrick Utley was named Chairman of the American Council on Germany in July 1998. He also is President of the Neil D. Levin Graduate Institute of International Relations and Commerce of the State University of New York.
Mr. Utley previously served as a senior correspondent for CNN based in the network’s New York bureau. His 2000 book, You Should Have Been Here Yesterday, provides a sweeping history of network news. Before joining CNN in February 1997, Mr. Utley served as ABC News’ chief foreign correspondent for three years. Earlier, he spent 30 years with NBC News covering international affairs and reporting from more than 70 countries.
Mr. Utley started with NBC News in 1963 and was based in the Brussels bureau. The following year, he was assigned to the Saigon bureau, where he reported on the Vietnam War. In 1966, Mr. Utley was transferred to New York to anchor “Vietnam Weekly Review” and to report on the war for “Today.” From 1966 to 1971, he was based in several NBC international bureaus, and he was the network’s London-based chief European correspondent from 1973 to 1979.
From 1982 to 1987, Mr. Utley served as NBC’s chief foreign correspondent. During this time, Mr. Utley was awarded several of journalism’s most distinguished honors. He received the Overseas Press Club’s Edward R. Murrow Award in 1984 for his reports on Soviet-American relations, and he was given the George Foster Peabody Award in 1986 for his contributions to “Vietnam: Ten Years Later.”
Additionally, while at NBC, Mr. Utley moderated “Meet the Press” in Washington, D.C., anchored “Sunday Today” from 1987 to 1992, hosted the monthly magazine “First Tuesday,” and anchored “NBC Magazine.” He also covered the 1972, 1980, and 1988 presidential conventions and elections. His final assignment with NBC was as weekend news anchor in New York.
Mr. Utley holds a B.A. in political science from Carleton College in Minnesota. After serving in the U.S. Army, he spent a year studying eastern European affairs at the Free University of West Berlin. Mr. Utley, who was born in Chicago, is the son of the late Clifton Utley, an NBC News Chicago commentator, and Frayn Utley, a former NBC reporter. |
