In 1992, the American Council on Germany inaugurated a program to reach beyond the business community in New York and the policy community in Washington, D.C., by creating fora for the discussion of transatlantic business and political affairs in other cities across the country. This unique nationwide outreach program is intended to encourage discussion and exchange among the professional community in each Chapter city. Based on a grant from a business partner of the late Eric M. Warburg, one of the founders of the ACG, Chapters of the Council were established outside of New York.

With 15 well-established Chapters and three pilot Chapters, the ACG’s activities and events have reached a wide audience of local decision-makers and opinion leaders as well as the interested public. Government officials, politicians, business leaders, journalists, and policy analysts have been among those to speak at Chapter events. They have addressed issues of common concern on both sides of the Atlantic and have contributed to the development of better mutual understanding regarding those issues.

Recent speakers have included German Bundestag Members Hans-Ulrich Klose (SPD), Rudolf Scharping (SPD), and Guido Westerwelle (FDP), Chairman of the German Free Democratic Party; Minister-Presidents Georg Milbradt of the Free State of Saxony and Edmund Stoiber of the Free State of Bavaria; Klaus Scharioth, Ambassador of Germany to the United States; journalists Klaus-Dieter Frankenberger, Foreign Editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and Theo Sommer, Editor-at-Large of DIE ZEIT; analysts Ambassador Reinhard Bettzüge, Visiting Ambassador at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP), and Karl Kaiser, Senior Fellow at the Weatherhead Center at Harvard University; Kurt Biedenkopf, President of Dresden International University; and Daniel Hamilton, Director of the Center for Transatlantic Relations at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at The Johns Hopkins University.
